HANNAH HOFFMAN INTERVIEW

Happy, positive.  Only two words of potentially thousands that can describe Hannah Hoffman’s smiling portrayal of life and the beauty within it.  As a young female music-maker, Hannah sees the world of music through wide eyes and only wishes for people to see the beauty of the world beyond their televisions and computer screen.

“Breathe some fresh air.  Sit on the grass.  Look at the mountains.  That shits real” – Hannah

How long have you been in the music scene?
I have been playing music since I was 3, but I guess I really got in to the scene when I was about fourteen

now from what I gather you primarily play piano/keys, do you play any other instruments?
I recently started playing guitar (poorly) with the band. And I think I would really like to learn that sucker! Also, I played flute for a little bit.

Now, the “band” I presume is your latest endevour – Hannah and the Wooden Spoons. Tell me about the group and how they formed.

Yes, those men! It’s actually a pretty cool story. Well, I used to go to punk shows at the Main Street Museum a lot, and I’d see The Jobz play there sometimes. Over time, Mr. Kiel Alarcon became Facebook friends, and he messaged me once and asked me if I knew any bass players. Eventually, Kiel and I became real life friends, and he said he knew some dudes who would be down to start a band. And I was SUPER excited because A, I was this young little thing who’d never had anyone want to play in a band with me before! And B, It was just an AWESOME idea so…. we made it happen

Kiel was really cool. He made most of this project happen.

Sounds like it was meant to be. How would you describe the band?
I would describe it as…a lot of fun. We all love what we’re doing, and we all get along really well. I think the sound we create is very Hannah. It’s got pop and punch, but it’s still soft and feminine. I love it.

Now other than playing the Spoons, are you still a solo artist, playing gigs, etc?
Sure am! I mean, I’m most comfortable with doing the solo thing because I’ve been doing it for a while now. And I know I always have that to rely on. But it’s nice to have the band because I love collaborating with different forces of nature, and those guys certainly are their own forces of nature.

I have an upcoming show at Molly’s in Hanover on April 28th 10-12 for those of you who didn’t know!

As a young artist, what are your thought on the current state of music production and sharing and where do you see things going in the future?
I think everything has been de-sensitized. The culture is de-sensitized. Everyone is relying on digital, not just for music, but for pretty much everything. I mean, I can’t say that I remember the “good ‘ol days” of vinyl, but I know that it was a big part of my childhood – my dad and mom still have HUGE record collections that we listened to frequently. My personal favorites were my tapes though. I liked my little tapes.

As for the future, I fear that it’s heading down a bad path. The music that’s out on the radio is shit and people are being brainwashed by this sort of “new-wave” shit the music industry is pushing

I don’t particularly enjoy it. But I am hoping there are a few individuals (what Doth Life?) who will resurrect the aesthetic of the “good ‘ol days” of music.

What advice would you offer to musicians of today and tomorrow to help this situation?
I guess I’d tell them to gou outside, breathe some fresh air. Sit on the grass. Look at the mountains. That shits real

Write poetry, write things that you really feel strongly about… things that make you tick

That’s real.

I think if you are more in tune with yourself, and less with your virtual “self” you have a greater chance at being succesful !

So what does the musical future of Hannah Hoffman entail?
You know, I’m not really sure. Haha, that sounds lame. But I know that I would love to get in to the studio, record an album or two, play around more (with the band, and by myself), travel, meet some cool people, and write write write.

I’m sort of doing my civic duty and educating myself at the moment, so my writing hasn’t been quite as fluent as usual. But this summer i’m expecting to have some more time to myself, and letting my creative juices flow.

excellent. Well WDL thanks you for taking time for the interview. We greatly appreciate what you are doing in our little corner of the world and can’t wait to see what comes next for Hannah Hoffman (and those spoons)
Well, I can’t either!

Pleasure, as always
